Chapter eighteen

I arrived at the shop as Edlynn was closing. “Ah, there you are,” she said as she removed the key from the shop door. “How did you get on with Ethan?”

“Good. It didn’t take long. But I went home and ended up taking a nap. I’m sorry. I wanted to get back here earlier.”

“It’s no problem. You must have needed it. I told you I had everything under control. I guess you are having quite the time at your house at the moment. Quite the houseful too – with all those shadow witches coming out of the woodwork. Be careful you don’t agree to having too much on your plate, especially when you’re working with Ethan as well. People will take you for everything they can, sometimes.”

“I wouldn’t think you would talk about Ethan like that,” I said.

“I’m not talking about Ethan … I’m talking about the others.”

“Well, fortunately, they haven’t been a bother at all. They keep themselves busy.”

“I’m sure …” Edlynn said. “Well, if you’re not busy now, do you fancy an after-work glass of rosé … at The Cidered Apple? We can catch up.”

“Sure, why not?” I replied.

“But first …” She reached into her basket before we set off down the High Street. “You’re looking pale, Daisy. You can eat this on the way.”

I remembered I hadn’t eaten lunch or the afternoon tea I had planned on and took a large bite of the chocolate brownie.

“You have to look after yourself, Daisy. It’s no wonder you’re taking naps on a Monday afternoon. But I have to admit … sometimes there’s nothing better than an afternoon nap.” She patted the back of my shoulder affectionately.

We continued on to The Cidered Apple. “Why do you think Aunt Olivia gave pages of the Prime Spell Book to Scarlet and Amber and Em? It doesn’t seem to help us with anything. The only new spell we have retrieved has been the Locks and Laces spell.”

“Maybe you’re over-thinking it. Maybe you have only been shown the spell you need right now. There may be something coming. Something that you’re not expecting. Olivia always had a knack for being prepared. Maybe she is helping you somehow – from the depths of the shadows.”

“Maybe.”

“Have you heard any more from Gwendolyn?”

“No, which makes the situation even more volatile. She is a hard woman to read. But I expect that is exactly how she wants to appear.”

“I think so. I am sure she is keeping a close eye on things, though. And if I were you, I would be keeping a close eye on your new friends too. When it comes to matters involving shadow witches … there is so much they keep secret.”

“Why do you think there has always been this divide between shadows and other assigned witches?”

“Oh, I never noticed.”

“You know you’re lying,” I said.

“I know.” She linked her arm through mine. “There was a time when everything used to run smoothly down here in Devon. We all got along, used the follies, traded.
